Munich Airport Hits New Milestone: 6.2 Million Passengers This Summer

Munich Airport has reached new heights this summer, welcoming 6.2 million passengers over the past six weeks. This impressive figure represents a 10% increase from the previous year. The busiest day was Sunday, September 1st, with 143,000 passengers passing through the airport.

This surge in demand resulted in a record-breaking load factor of 86% for aircraft. Airlines conducted 46,000 takeoffs and landings during the holiday season, marking a 7.6% rise compared to last summer.

Munich Airport achieved 91% of the passenger volume seen in 2019. Notably, intercontinental travel to North America surpassed 2019 levels by 14%. Additionally, traffic to and from Mediterranean countries returned to pre-crisis figures.

Record-Breaking Passenger Numbers in Terminal 2

During the holiday period, Terminal 2, used by Lufthansa and its partners, saw passenger numbers exceed pre-crisis levels on 19 different occasions.

Smooth Operations Amidst Challenges

Despite facing delays and extended wait times due to thunderstorms and airspace restrictions across Europe, Munich Airport maintained smooth operations. The airport’s efficient processes and the swift onboarding of new staff played crucial roles. Increased digitalization, such as self-service luggage machines and automated passport control, significantly improved efficiency.

Around one-third of departing passengers used self-service options. The modernization of Central Security Control in Terminal 2 is progressing, with most upgrades expected to be completed by the year’s end.
