Newark Sees Flight Surge in October—United Airlines Emerges as Leader

Newark Liberty International Airport, a key hub for the New York metropolitan area, is gearing up for a bustling October. With its proximity to Manhattan, just nine miles away, Newark is essential for travelers. Notably, United Airlines, along with United Express, dominates this airport, accounting for nearly two-thirds of all passenger traffic.

As the second-busiest airport in the New York area, Newark serves approximately 49.1 million passengers annually. While it ranks behind JFK, it surpasses LaGuardia, which focuses mainly on domestic flights. Currently, Newark hosts around 50 airlines, but United stands out. Among the ten busiest routes this October, United operates eight, including the top eight destinations.

United Airlines flies 26 out of the 30 busiest routes from Newark. The most frequented destinations include Chicago O’Hare, Houston, San Francisco, Boston, Washington DC, Orlando, Denver, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, and Las Vegas. Among these, the route to Chicago O’Hare is the busiest, featuring 406 flights scheduled for October, equating to 70,979 available seats.

United’s control over Newark is significant, as the airline manages about 73% of the airport’s slots, translating to 902 of 1,233 total slots. Although the airline’s dominance raises eyebrows, it continues to enhance travel options from this crucial airport.

Despite United’s prevalence, other airlines maintain a presence in Newark. The five busiest non-United routes include Porter Airlines to Toronto, Delta Air Lines to Atlanta, and Air Canada to Toronto Pearson. American Airlines also operates routes to Charlotte Douglas and Chicago O’Hare. Notably, Porter Airlines provides 273 flights to Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, making it the ninth busiest route this October.

Newark Liberty International Airport is set for a vibrant month, with United Airlines firmly in the lead. While United provides the majority of flights, other carriers contribute to the airport’s dynamic travel landscape.
