AirAsia has decided to cancel its Nairobi route due to low travel demand. The airline entered Africa for the first time in November 2024 with flights from Kuala Lumpur to Nairobi. However, bookings failed to meet expectations. AirAsia planned this route to connect Southeast Asia with East Africa using its Airbus A330-300 aircraft. The airline aimed to attract budget-conscious travelers, but market response fell short of projections.
The Kuala Lumpur–Nairobi route offered four direct flights per week. AirAsia expected strong demand from both business and tourism segments. Despite using a wide-body aircraft with premium features, the airline couldn’t fill enough seats. As a result, the final flight will operate in August 2025. AirAsia will officially end the service by September 1, 2025.
This development highlights the risks of expanding into new regions without established demand. AirAsia entered the African market as part of its global growth strategy. The company had hoped Nairobi would serve as a launchpad for other African cities like Johannesburg and Cape Town. But with limited interest, AirAsia is now shifting its focus back to stronger markets in Asia and Australia.
Customers with bookings after August will receive full refunds or travel credits. AirAsia has assured smooth processing for all affected passengers. The airline continues to monitor African market trends for future opportunities. If demand improves, it may resume flights to Nairobi or launch new African routes later.
This route cancellation shows AirAsia’s flexibility in adjusting its expansion strategies. While Nairobi did not deliver the expected returns, the airline stays committed to offering affordable international travel. AirAsia will now refine its plans to explore profitable destinations with proven demand.
