Ontario Airport Stays Strong — Cargo and Global Flights Soar Despite Passenger Slowdown

Ontario International Airport continues to demonstrate remarkable resilience, even after a slight decline in passenger traffic during September 2025. Despite the dip, the airport remains a powerful hub for Southern California’s travel and trade, as cargo and international routes continue to grow steadily.

During September 2025, Ontario International Airport welcomed 599,086 passengers, showing only a 1.1% decrease from last year. However, international travel surged by nearly 46%, and therefore, global routes have become the airport’s strongest growth engine. Moreover, this surge highlights a clear shift in traveler preferences, emphasizing ONT’s increasing role in global connectivity.

Although domestic travel softened slightly, the airport’s year-to-date numbers tell a different story. So far in 2025, ONT has served over 5.2 million passengers, representing a 0.8% increase compared to 2024. Furthermore, this steady growth underlines the airport’s capacity to adapt quickly to changing travel dynamics and maintain its upward trajectory.

In addition, cargo operations continue to deliver impressive performance. The airport handled 65,587 tons of cargo in September, marking a 1% rise from last year. While freight volumes dropped slightly, mail shipments jumped nearly 39%, which effectively offset the decline. As a result, ONT strengthened its role in logistics, supporting Southern California’s expanding e-commerce and trade network.

Meanwhile, Southwest Airlines led the passenger market once again, followed by key carriers such as American, Delta, United, and Frontier. Together, these partnerships reinforce ONT’s network and push its growth ambitions forward.

Looking ahead, Ontario International Airport appears well-positioned for sustained success. As the airport enters the final quarter of 2025, continued international expansion and thriving cargo operations promise a bright outlook. Ultimately, Ontario International Airport stands not just as a resilient gateway but also as a dynamic force shaping regional and global connectivity.
