Ontario International Airport’s New $90M Runway Rehab Project!

Ontario International Airport (ONT) has recently celebrated a significant milestone with the completion of a $90 million runway rehabilitation project. This extensive upgrade aims to enhance safety and efficiency for the millions of travelers who depend on this airport each year. Located just two miles from downtown Ontario, California, and about 38 miles east of Los Angeles, ONT serves as a vital gateway for passengers and cargo.

This ambitious project spanned two years, starting in February 2023 and continuing into this year. During this time, crews repaved over 80,000 square yards of the airport’s southernmost runway, known as 8R-26L. Additionally, they removed outdated concrete, upgraded selected taxiways, and constructed a new taxiway called S8. Furthermore, installing modern LED lighting significantly enhances the airport’s infrastructure.

The successful completion of this project resulted from substantial federal support, which covered two-thirds of the costs through grants from the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program. Specifically, ONT received $67 million to fund these upgrades, while the remaining costs came from airport-generated revenue. The airport also secured an additional $4 million for design and rehabilitation work on the northernmost runway.

The leadership at the airport has expressed appreciation for the federal support that made this project possible. This collaboration highlights a strong commitment to improving airport operations and enhancing the travel experience for passengers at Ontario International Airport.

Thanks to these improvements, ONT continues to experience remarkable growth, achieving 42 consecutive months of year-over-year passenger increases. The airport is on track to welcome over seven million travelers this calendar year alone. Since returning to local ownership in 2016, passenger numbers have surged by an impressive 75%.

In addition to passenger flights, Ontario International Airport ranks among the top ten cargo airports in the United States. It serves as a key hub for major companies such as FedEx Express, UPS Airlines, and Amazon Air. With the runway project completed, the airport is poised to support continued growth and enhance its service capabilities. The leadership at ONT values the support received from various stakeholders, emphasizing their dedication to connecting the Inland Empire region to the world.
