Discover Airlines has shaken up its winter schedule for 2025-2026, creating a major shift in the Mexican Caribbean. Instead of flying to Tulum International, the airline will now land in Cancun. This move boosts Cancun’s status while creating setbacks for Tulum’s struggling tourism infrastructure. Discover Airlines made the change due to ongoing airport issues in Tulum, including costly ground operations and poor transportation access. These challenges continue to frustrate travelers and tour operators alike.
Since the Tulum airport opened, officials hoped it would reduce traffic from Cancun and position the city as a rising tourism hub. However, growing complaints and operational difficulties have kept airlines away. Discover Airlines, seeking reliability and smoother logistics, will now operate more frequent flights into Cancun. Their flights from Germany will run four times weekly, with an extra flight during the holiday season. This shows a clear shift in airline confidence back to Cancun.
Other airlines have already started pulling back from Tulum. Air Canada and Copa Airlines both redirected services to Cancun earlier this year. These moves show how Tulum’s early promise now faces serious hurdles. Cancun, meanwhile, continues to attract new routes thanks to its polished infrastructure, better ground transport, and wider flight options. The city remains the gateway to the Riviera Maya, just an hour from Tulum by road.
Tulum still holds strong tourism potential, but success requires big changes. Officials must invest in airport operations, improve transportation, and support sustainable tourism. Without fast improvements, Tulum risks losing more international visitors. Discover Airlines choosing Cancun reflects the urgent need for action. Tulum can still rise, but only if it fixes the cracks in its foundation.
