Portugal’s second busiest airport, Porto Airport, has entered a crucial phase of transformation. Major runway upgrades and modern systems are currently under construction. These upgrades aim to boost safety, handle higher traffic, and support future demands. However, travelers are now facing delays, cancellations, and rerouted flights due to limited runway access.

The work began after the official announcement in May 2024 and continues until early 2026. Porto Airport’s management launched this €50 million project to rebuild core runway structures and improve infrastructure. The timing has disrupted normal operations significantly. Between morning and noon on a recent day, dozens of flights saw interruptions. Aircraft were diverted to other cities while passengers dealt with long delays.

Construction crews are resurfacing the primary runway to enhance aircraft grip and durability. They are also reinforcing deeper layers to support modern jets. Engineers are redesigning the surrounding runway strip to ensure safety during emergencies. In addition, they are replacing outdated lights with high-efficiency LED systems. These changes will reduce maintenance costs and improve visibility for pilots.

The renovation includes a drainage upgrade to prevent flooding and water-related incidents during rain. Most notably, the team is preparing to install a Category II Instrument Landing System. This advanced navigation aid will help planes land safely in fog and rain. The region often experiences poor weather, so this upgrade plays a critical role.

While the construction creates current hassles, the long-term rewards are clear. Passengers can expect better flight reliability and fewer weather-related delays once work finishes. The airport will offer smoother operations and a safer travel experience.

Porto Airport remains essential to Portugal’s growing aviation network. Despite short-term pain, the ongoing investment secures a stronger future for both travelers and airlines.
