Real ID Alert: What You Need to Know for Domestic U.S. Travel

Starting next May, travelers within the United States will be required to present an additional form of identification that is more secure than a state-issued driver’s license or ID if they prefer not to carry their passport.

As of May 7, 2025, anyone flying domestically will need to have a Real ID with them, unless they choose to bring their passport instead.

Here’s what you should know about the application process, including requirements and where to apply.

What is a Real ID?

A Real ID is an upgraded identification that will be mandatory for accessing certain federal buildings, boarding commercial flights, and entering nuclear power facilities as of May 7, 2025. This requirement comes from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

The Real ID Act was enacted by Congress in 2005 and sets minimum security standards for state-issued driver\’s licenses, permits, and identification cards. Its purpose is to mitigate identity fraud; accordingly, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents are prohibited from accepting IDs that do not comply with these new standards.

Who requires one?

All travelers aged 18 and above who intend to fly domestically or visit specific federal facilities must possess a Real ID or another valid form of identification such as a passport. Starting May 7, 2025, TSA will accept only those Real IDs marked with a compliant star. A few states—including Washington, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, and Vermont—issue Enhanced Driver\’s Licenses (EDLs) marked with a flag that also satisfy Real ID requirements.

Do I possess a Real ID?

Real IDs feature a star symbol located in the upper right corner.

If you have recently renewed your driver’s license, it may be an Enhanced Driver\’s License (EDL), which complies with Real ID criteria. Look at the top right corner for an American flag; its presence indicates compliance. If there is no stamp present, then your license does not meet the standards set forth by the act.

How can I obtain one?

All states in the U.S. are issuing Real IDs through their respective driver licensing agencies; however, requirements may differ by state. Many offices now require appointments that can be scheduled online.

To find detailed instructions on applying for a Real ID and learn what documents you’ll need for your appointment, visit the DHS website and select your state of residence. Generally required documents include your social security card, proof of citizenship, and several proofs of residency.

What are the costs involved?

While there isn’t an extra fee specifically for obtaining a Real ID, standard processing fees charged by DMV still apply. The cost for acquiring an enhanced ID is $30.
