Ryanair is betting big on Albania’s future as a travel hotspot. Therefore, the airline will open a new base at Tirana International Airport in April 2026, investing nearly $300 million to station three Boeing 737-800 jets. As a result, this bold step will create thousands of jobs, strengthen Albania’s economy, and fuel its rapidly growing tourism industry.
Albania has seen visitor numbers rise sharply in recent years, and Ryanair wants to accelerate that growth. Moreover, the airline will introduce ten new routes from Tirana to key European destinations, including major cities in Italy, Ireland, and the UK. At the same time, it will boost weekly departures on popular existing routes. Consequently, by summer 2026, Tirana will handle 450 weekly flights, carrying nearly four million passengers each year. This expansion will firmly place Albania on the European weekend getaway map.
The growth potential does not stop there. In fact, Ryanair plans to eventually base six aircraft in Tirana, which would allow it to serve more than five million passengers annually. Therefore, this move could generate over 4,000 jobs by 2030, provided Albania maintains its low-cost aviation policies. Furthermore, stronger connectivity will drive more tourists into the country, benefiting hotels, restaurants, and local businesses.
Albania’s tourism already shows impressive momentum. For example, in 2023, the nation welcomed 8.3 million visitors, a dramatic rise from the previous year. Additionally, with destinations like Ksamil’s turquoise beaches, the rugged Albanian Alps, and UNESCO-listed towns, the country attracts travelers seeking both culture and adventure. Consequently, Ryanair’s expansion will make these experiences more accessible to European tourists.
This partnership between Albania and Ryanair represents more than just new flights. In fact, it marks a transformation in how the world sees Albania, not just as a hidden gem but as a major destination ready to welcome millions of visitors each year.
