The aviation industry’s interest in alternative fuels is growing rapidly. Airlines aim to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Southwest Airlines signed Illinois’ largest SAF deal. The deal secures 3.6 million gallons of SAF, which can blend into 12 million gallons of fuel. This shift toward greener fuel is part of Southwest’s long-term sustainability strategy.
Southwest Airlines sets goals to cut plastic waste and improve fuel efficiency. The airline plans to reduce plastic waste and jet fuel consumption within a few years. By 2030, it will electrify 50% of ground support equipment to lower emissions.
Southwest upgrades its fleet to Boeing 737 MAX aircraft to cut emissions. These planes improve fuel efficiency by 14% compared to older models. The airline also invests in facilities that produce SAF from renewable sources.
