Southwest Airlines has introduced a significant change to its flight credit policy, implementing expiration dates starting in May 2025. The airline, known for its customer-centric approach, is shifting its strategy to better align with industry practices. Previously, Southwest flight credits lasted indefinitely. However, starting May 28, 2025, credits will expire based on the fare type of the ticket.
The new rules outline that standard fare credits will expire in 12 months, while basic Wanna Get Away fares will last only six months. This shift represents a departure from Southwest’s longstanding reputation for flexibility, where credits had no expiration. Additionally, the airline will limit the ability to transfer credits. Only specific fares, like Wanna Get Away Plus, Anytime, and Business Select, will allow a one-time credit transfer between Rapid Rewards members.
This shift in Southwest’s policy highlights a change in its overall approach to travel. The airline, once known for offering flexible travel options, is moving toward a more structured model. While this may streamline processes and reflect broader industry trends, it also signals a shift away from Southwest’s reputation for offering hassle-free, customer-first service.
Passengers who currently hold or plan to earn Southwest flight credits should act before May 28, 2025. After this date, all credits issued will follow the new expiration rules, depending on the fare class. Travelers need to plan ahead to make the most of their credits before the policy changes take effect. This adjustment reflects a wider shift in the airline industry, as major carriers refine their policies to meet evolving customer expectations.
