Southwest Airlines is leading a dramatic shift in Florida travel by introducing major changes to its fare structure. Alongside airlines like American, United, Delta, Spirit, and Breeze, Southwest Airlines now offers structured fare bundles. Consequently, this strategy replaces its long-standing open seating approach and signals a new era in budget-friendly air travel.
In response to traveler demands and competitive pressures, Southwest Airlines will introduce four branded fare bundles. These will include options like Basic, Choice, Choice Preferred, and Choice Extra. Therefore, travelers can now select fares based on their specific needs. The changes will begin in late 2025 and continue into 2026. Additionally, assigned seating will become part of the new fare system. Moreover, baggage fees will apply to Basic fare passengers, ending the era of two free checked bags.
Meanwhile, Fort Myers’ RSW Airport is undergoing expansion, adding 14 new gates. As a result, this move positions RSW as a key player in Florida’s travel boom. Southwest Airlines plans to expand its route network from RSW, connecting travelers to domestic and tropical destinations. In turn, these efforts will strengthen RSW’s status as a major regional gateway.
At the same time, Southwest Airlines is responding to economic challenges with a leaner workforce. The airline will cut about 1,750 jobs to stay agile in a volatile market. However, despite the cuts, Southwest is doubling down on its Florida investment by using RSW as a central hub.
These sweeping changes reflect a broader shift in the airline’s strategy. Consequently, travelers can expect more choices, greater personalization, and increased access to vacation spots. Fort Myers is emerging as a major beneficiary of this strategic realignment.
By redesigning its fare structure and strengthening its presence at RSW, Southwest Airlines is redefining how travelers fly to and from Florida. Ultimately, this bold transformation promises a new level of flexibility and value in regional air travel.
