Southwest Airlines will invest $25 million to renovate the baggage claim area at St. Louis Lambert International Airport. This project aims to improve baggage handling efficiency and boost operational capacity. The renovation will focus on Terminal 2’s baggage claim area.
Southwest Airlines began planning this renovation in 2018 but delayed the project multiple times. Airport privatization talks and the COVID-19 pandemic caused the hold-ups. Initially, Southwest planned to add a third baggage carousel. However, it scrapped that idea and opted for a scaled-back project to ease baggage congestion.
Southwest Airlines will fully fund the $25 million project. The city of St. Louis will keep ownership of the terminal, but Southwest will finance the upgrades. These improvements will speed up baggage handling for departing passengers, enhancing overall efficiency and reducing delays.
Originally, Southwest Airlines proposed a $60 million plan to overhaul the baggage system, restrooms, and baggage service office. However, the airport’s long-term goal to consolidate terminals changed Southwest’s approach. The new terminal will combine both terminals, starting construction in 2026 and completing by 2032. Given the temporary nature of the old system, Southwest chose a more cost-effective solution.
Construction will begin in mid-2025 and take about 18 months. While some airport commission members hoped for a third carousel, they understand Southwest’s decision to prioritize long-term efficiency. Southwest Airlines remains the largest carrier at the airport and will play a key role in its future growth.
As Southwest Airlines moves forward with these improvements, it continues to prioritize passenger satisfaction at St. Louis Lambert International Airport.
