Southwest Airlines is no longer staying grounded in domestic skies. Therefore, the carrier has now filed a transformative application with the Department of Transportation, seeking approval to fly to over 130 countries that have Open-Skies agreements with the U.S. Consequently, this signals a bold leap for Southwest Airlines and sets the stage for massive changes in the budget travel industry.
Previously, the airline was known for its short-haul domestic network. However, it is now ready to expand into international territory. As global air travel booms in 2025, low-cost carriers struggle to grow at home. Thus, Southwest Airlines is targeting long-haul markets to spark fresh growth. Meanwhile, major airlines are capitalizing on global routes, which makes this a timely shift.
Moreover, Southwest Airlines plans to use its growing fleet of Boeing 737 Max 8 jets. Since these jets offer extended range and efficiency, they now allow the airline to reach Europe, South America, and the Pacific. This year, as new jets arrive, Southwest gains the tools to support mid-range international flights without switching aircraft types.
Although the move does not confirm immediate new routes, it clearly reflects international ambition. With the Open-Skies framework in place, Southwest Airlines can bypass complex country-by-country negotiations. As a result, this opens global markets, enhances flexibility, and redefines possibilities for low-cost travel.
