Southwest Airlines passengers on a Houston-bound flight were caught off guard by a sudden diversion on Thursday. The flight from Hollywood Burbank Airport, initially set to land at Houston Hobby Airport, instead rerouted to San Antonio, due to scheduled rehearsals for the “Wings Over Houston” airshow.
The annual airshow, held at Ellington Field on October 26th and 27th, brings numerous performances, including the U.S. Navy Blue Angels. However, rehearsals on Thursday unexpectedly affected air traffic, leading to this unplanned diversion. As planes approached Hobby Airport during the Blue Angels’ practice, they faced restricted airspace, preventing safe landings. Hobby Airport noted that typical operations continue even with airshows, but one runway’s temporary construction led to heavier traffic on the alternative runway. This runway, unfortunately, overlaps with the restricted airspace needed for the show’s rehearsals.
Southwest Airlines could not anticipate the impact of the practice schedule and had no prior notification for passengers. Some travelers, just minutes from landing, were informed of the rerouting without enough time to prepare, leading to confusion and frustration. Southwest Airlines later acknowledged the inconvenience but emphasized that only a small percentage of flights experienced rerouting. They expressed that larger adjustments, like widespread cancellations, would have worsened disruption for passengers.
Altogether, four Southwest Airlines flights experienced diversions due to this situation. To minimize inconvenience, the airline’s team plans to monitor ongoing disruptions and adjust accordingly. Hobby Airport extended apologies, explaining the unusual mix of airshow activities and runway constraints, which created these scheduling challenges.
As the “Wings Over Houston” show approaches, both Southwest Airlines and airport authorities aim to ensure smoother operations for travelers, despite the unique air traffic demands posed by the event.
