Exciting developments are underway at Southwest Florida International Airport as the $1 billion Terminal Expansion Phase 2 project begins in Fort Myers. This expansion aims to boost the airport’s capacity and improve passenger experiences. It addresses the growing demand for air travel in the Southwest region.
In September 2021, the Lee County Port Authority announced the first phase of the expansion. Now, they are ready for the next stage, which starts tomorrow. This second phase will last three years and add 14 new gates in a newly constructed concourse.
The terminal will undergo significant upgrades across all three floors. For instance, these enhancements include a modern baggage claim area and a revamped ticketing lobby. Additionally, the new baggage handling system will support plans for a total of 33 new gates.
This area, named Concourse E, promises many upgrades. It will feature an efficient TSA checkpoint along with various dining and retail options. Furthermore, the approved budget for Phase 2 is nearly $1.07 billion. This reflects a strategic partnership with Suffolk Construction Company, ensuring project success.
Moreover, the airport plans to consolidate TSA checkpoints into a more efficient 16-lane configuration. Enhanced terminal amenities will also include increased seating, diverse dining options, and a lounge area for travelers. Overall, this project will remodel over 164,000 square feet and add 117,000 square feet, marking it as the second-largest expansion in Lee County’s history.
This October, Fort Myers is bustling, with more than 5,500 roundtrip flights scheduled. Southwest Florida International Airport hosts 14 airlines, offering nearly 950,000 seats this month. Notably, Southwest Airlines dominates the market, providing about 20% of the flights and a significant number of available seats. Delta Air Lines follows closely, offering a competitive range of flights and seating options.
As the demand for air travel rises, Southwest Florida International Airport remains committed to enhancing its services. Therefore, this expansion will improve traveler experiences and ensure the airport stays a vital gateway to the Southwest region for years to come.
