Southwest Protects Passengers With Smart New Rules for Wheelchair Travelers

Southwest Airlines has launched new rules for passengers traveling with wheelchairs powered by lithium batteries. Therefore, the airline will require travelers to remove these batteries and carry them inside the cabin. Consequently, Southwest Airlines strengthens safety while reinforcing its leadership in the aviation industry.

The new policy begins on September 25, 2025, and enforces a 300-watt-hour limit. Moreover, passengers with larger batteries can use them until January 11, 2026. After that deadline, the airline will restrict these batteries from all flights. However, the batteries carried in the cabin will not count toward personal item limits.

Although fewer than 0.1 percent of travelers will be affected, the impact remains important. In fact, Southwest Airlines considers lithium batteries as top causes of fire and smoke incidents in aviation. Furthermore, placing the batteries inside the cabin ensures faster crew response if problems arise.

In addition, Southwest Airlines already requires lithium power banks to remain visible during flights. The new wheelchair rules extend that approach and demonstrate the airline’s proactive strategy. Meanwhile, safety experts highlight that lithium batteries across devices continue to increase risks in aviation.

Therefore, by creating a transition period and stressing education, Southwest Airlines supports smooth passenger adjustment. Moreover, the airline aims to reduce inconvenience for travelers while safeguarding every passenger and crew member. Instead of ignoring potential hazards, Southwest Airlines acts decisively to protect lives and maintain trust.

Consequently, as global airlines face rising pressure, Southwest Airlines emerges as an industry model. Furthermore, its rules show determination to prioritize safety and set higher standards across aviation. With these measures, Southwest Airlines underscores its role as a leader in passenger protection.
