Strikes in Greece: What Every Traveler Needs to Know Right Now!

Greek air traffic controller strikes have thrown travel plans into disarray. Passengers flying with TUI, easyJet, Ryanair, and British Airways face massive disruptions. The 24-hour walkout on April 9 has forced airlines to cancel and delay flights, stranding thousands.

The nationwide strike protests the lack of salary reinstatements for public sector employees. As a result, nearly 80 flights from the UK to Greece may be affected. Experts estimate around 12,800 travelers will endure unexpected delays and cancellations.

Major UK airports, including Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Edinburgh, Birmingham, and Luton, are seeing significant disruptions. Greece’s airspace is also a crucial route for flights heading to the Middle East, Asia, and Australia. This means rerouted flights could cause additional delays for international travelers.

Airlines have warned passengers to expect long waits. Experts recommend signing up for real-time flight updates via SMS or email. Travelers should pack essentials such as snacks, extra cash, and water to prepare for possible extended delays.

Since the strikes are beyond airline control, compensation is not available under EU261 regulations. However, passengers can receive assistance if their delay surpasses two hours for short-haul, three hours for medium-haul, and four hours for long-haul flights. This assistance includes meals, hotel stays if necessary, and transport to and from the airport. For canceled flights, passengers can request a refund or alternative booking at no extra cost.

With summer approaching, this disruption highlights the fragility of air travel in Europe. Travelers should remain vigilant, stay informed, and prepare for unexpected delays when planning their trips.
