Hong Kong International Airport continues to expand its reach with a major upgrade in motion. Terminal 2, partially opening in September 2025, marks a turning point in regional air travel. As passenger numbers climb post-pandemic, this new terminal provides critical relief and modern features.
Initially, the coach waiting hall will open with 41 bays to serve buses, hotel shuttles, and cross-border coaches. Consequently, the airport improves transport flow while reducing pressure on outdated Terminal 1 facilities. This step begins a phased rollout that avoids delays during peak travel seasons.
Moreover, Terminal 2 forms part of the HK$141.5 billion three-runway expansion. The HK$12.9 billion terminal project alone brings high-tech solutions such as automated bag drops and contactless services. In doing so, Hong Kong International Airport enhances comfort, security, and speed for millions of travelers.
The airport forecasts 66 million passengers by the end of 2025. After full terminal operations begin, it expects this number to surpass 70 million. To support this, 10 to 20 airlines flying to destinations like Japan and Thailand will shift operations to Terminal 2 by March 2026.
Until then, passengers will ride an automated system to reach gates still located in Terminal 1. However, boarding gates in Terminal 2 will gradually open between late 2026 and early 2027. As a result, travelers will enjoy more direct and efficient boarding experiences.
Additionally, autonomous vehicles will begin trials by late 2025, improving access between the terminal and nearby bridge links. At the same time, the airport adds 1,800 automated parking spaces and 200 drop-off bays to handle increasing road traffic.
Overall, Hong Kong International Airport aims to support up to 120 million travelers yearly. Through smarter infrastructure and seamless design, it secures its role as a leading aviation gateway in Asia.
