Washington, D.C. stands out as the premier option for those venturing out alone.
According to a recent study, September sees the highest number of solo travelers within the United States compared to any other month. One may expect popular tourist destinations like New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco to rank at the top; however, they do not make the list. Instead, cities such as Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, and Salt Lake City are favored by domestic solo travelers. Nonetheless, Washington, D.C. is identified as the leading choice for individuals traveling alone.
The research conducted by OpenTable and Kayak analyzed data on solo restaurant and hotel bookings across major urban areas for 2023 and 2024. The results indicate a significant increase in solo travel; specifically, there has been a 38 percent rise in solo hotel bookings since 2019 and an 8 percent uptick in individuals dining alone over the past year.
Those planning a visit to the nation’s capital can expect they are not alone in their travels. A report shows that approximately 70 percent of Americans have traveled independently at some point, while 81 percent have experienced dining alone. Notably, nearly 35 percent of respondents express a desire for \”me-time\” when making travel plans.
Washington, D.C. proves to be an ideal destination for solo travelers due to its walkability complemented by numerous bike-sharing options and an efficient metro system that makes navigating its four quadrants straightforward. Additionally, D.C. is home to more free museums than any other location in the country—thanks largely to an array of Smithsonian institutions situated along the National Mall—and visitors can also enjoy various monuments and memorials at no cost.
With a dynamic culinary landscape awaiting them, solo travelers should note that individuals tend to spend 48 percent more on meals when dining alone compared to eating in groups according to the study\’s findings. Therefore, indulging is encouraged; after all, Washington boasts over 20 Michelin-starred restaurants—a compelling reason to visit.
