The holiday season brings over 6,900 daily regional jet flights across the US in December. This number reflects a slight drop from the 9,000 flights seen before the pandemic in 2019. Regional jets (RJs) still dominate domestic and short-haul international routes but now hold 28% of the market. This is six percentage points lower than in 2019.
Despite this decline, larger RJs continue to gain ground. The average RJ now has 68 seats, up from 64 in 2019. Larger jets like the Embraer E175 serve shorter routes across the country. More than 349 US airports will see RJ services this December. Out of these, 329 will have at least one daily flight. Texas remains the most popular state for RJs, thanks to American Airlines and United Airlines.
American Eagle leads with 2,764 daily RJ flights, making up the majority of the RJ traffic. United Express and Delta Connection also account for most regional jet flights. Chicago O’Hare still tops the list of regional jet airports. It remains the busiest RJ hub with 45% of all daily RJ flights. Other major hubs like Dallas/Fort Worth and Charlotte hold strong positions, while Houston Intercontinental and Denver have dropped in rankings since 2019.
Chicago O’Hare stands as the busiest RJ hub, followed by Charlotte and Dallas/Fort Worth. These airports demonstrate the importance of regional jets in connecting US cities. Regional jets continue to play a critical role in aviation, ensuring efficient connections at key jet airports across the US.
