Alaska Airlines maintains a significant presence in California, particularly at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The airline operates over 2,000 departures each month from LAX, covering both short and long-haul routes. These flights include domestic and international services, connecting the West Coast with key destinations across the United States and beyond.
LAX is one of the busiest airports globally, serving as a hub for major US carriers. Alaska Airlines ranks as the fifth-largest carrier at this airport. Despite fierce competition from other airlines, Alaska Airlines has carved out a strong position at LAX, with a market share of over 6%. The airline gained valuable slots at LAX after acquiring Virgin America in 2016, further strengthening its operations there.
In January 2025, Alaska Airlines will operate several of its longest routes from LAX. Among them are flights to New York’s Newark Liberty International Airport and to major international destinations such as London, Seoul, and Taipei. These routes contribute to the airline’s expansive network, which sees nearly 4,000 return flights from LAX each month.
The airline also competes on routes to popular vacation spots, such as Hawaii and Costa Rica. Alaska Airlines faces competition from both legacy carriers and budget airlines on several of these routes, yet it maintains a strong foothold with its frequent services and competitive pricing.
Alaska Airlines continues to prioritize LAX as a central hub in its network, expanding operations and offering travelers a range of options for both business and leisure. By adding new routes and increasing service frequencies, the airline positions itself as a key player in the highly competitive LAX market.
