Turkish Airlines just changed global aviation with a flawless 33-hour move to Istanbul Grand Airport (IGA). The airline left behind the limits of Atatürk Airport and entered a new phase of growth. With this move, Turkish Airlines set a new global standard for operational efficiency.
Since IGA sits at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa, it strengthens the airline’s reach. The airport already handles 90 million passengers and connects over 300 cities worldwide. Additionally, three active runways support 120 aircraft movements per hour.
Earlier, Atatürk Airport caused delays due to heavy traffic and limited space. However, IGA now reduces wait times, boosts fuel efficiency, and improves punctuality. The airline also upgraded its lounges, expanded check-in zones, and optimized boarding to serve more passengers smoothly.
Moreover, the relocation itself stunned the world. In just 33 hours, over 1,000 trucks moved 47,000 tons of equipment across 46 kilometers. Despite the scale, Turkish Airlines executed the plan without delay or disruption. This move proved the airline’s unmatched planning and coordination.
Furthermore, IGA leads with smart tech. Biometric boarding, contactless check-in, and AI-powered systems speed up every step. Meanwhile, its Airport Operations Center uses big data for real-time control of flights and baggage.
In cargo, the airline has doubled capacity. At its new SmartIST terminal, Turkish Airlines now processes 2.5 million tons yearly. Through robotics and real-time tracking, the cargo process became faster and more reliable. Plans are in place to reach up to 6 million tons annually.
Finally, the airline chose to build its own lounges and systems inside IGA. This independence helps support a long-term growth plan. By 2033, Turkish Airlines aims to operate 813 planes and reach 400 destinations.
