United cut its Washington Dulles to London Heathrow daytime flights for next summer, following Delta’s recent reduction. These adjustments show a shift in US-European transatlantic travel strategies.
United ended its daytime Dulles-Heathrow flights to focus on other routes and expand its network. Initially, United planned to bring back this service in March 2025 using its Boeing 767-300ERs. However, it reduced the Heathrow services from 22 daily flights to 20. United leased extra slots from Lufthansa but may return them due to the cutback.
Daytime flights across the Atlantic rarely operate because of limited demand and fewer connecting options. United now focuses on routes with higher demand, especially where travelers want daytime alternatives. Airlines usually avoid long-haul daytime services due to lower profitability and limited aircraft availability. However, passengers prefer these flights to reduce jetlag.
Despite the cutbacks, United will maintain its Newark to London Heathrow daytime flights. This service helps travelers who seek daytime transatlantic options.
