United Airlines has made strategic changes by permanently discontinuing two significant international routes. The airline has stopped flights from Washington D.C. (IAD) to Amman, Jordan (AMM) and Newark, New Jersey (EWR) to Tenerife, Spain (TFS). This shift reflects United Airlines’ response to both geopolitical tensions and evolving travel demand.
Washington to Amman Route Ends for United
United initially introduced its Washington D.C. to Amman route in 2022, but the service faced challenges. The route operated three times weekly on the Boeing 787-8, offering 243 seats. However, regional conflicts, especially near Israel, led to an earlier suspension. United Airlines has now decided to permanently end the route due to ongoing safety concerns and low demand. The last flight for this route occurred in mid-August 2024, marking the airline’s full exit from this market.
Newark to Tenerife Route Termination in 2025
In another move, United Airlines will end its Newark to Tenerife route by April 2025. Although the route had been extended to year-round service, weak summer performance triggered its reevaluation. The airline operates the route using Boeing 757-200 aircraft, which features 176 seats, including 16 Polaris business class seats and 42 Economy Plus seats. While the route may return as a winter-only service, United Airlines is discontinuing it for now due to low demand.
Strategic Adjustments by United Airlines
These changes highlight “United Airlines’” strategic response to fluctuating geopolitical situations and market conditions. The airline continues to adjust its route offerings based on travel demand and safety concerns. While these cancellations reflect the airline’s focus on long-term stability, they may also signal a shift in its international strategy.
