On a United Airlines flight from Guam to Tokyo, 18 passengers got sick during the journey, likely from food poisoning. This health scare occurred on flight 873, heading to Narita Airport. Authorities are investigating a potential foodborne illness as the exact cause remains unclear.
The flight, which left Guam with a slight delay, was on a Boeing 737-800. The 3-hour, 55-minute journey took a worrying turn when passengers felt nauseous and vomited. Upon landing, some passengers went to the hospital, while others received minimal care.
Interestingly, a similar situation occurred just minutes earlier on a Japan Airlines flight traveling the same route. Passengers on this flight also showed symptoms of food poisoning. Japan Airlines denied that in-flight meals caused the sickness, noting that some passengers had symptoms before boarding. The incidents now lead authorities to suspect that the illness may have come from food before boarding, not from the airlines’ catering.
This incident adds to a series of food-related health problems reported by airlines in recent months. Earlier this year, a United Airlines flight from Seoul to San Francisco turned around after crew members fell ill, likely from pre-flight meals. Delta also dealt with food contamination issues, underscoring the challenges airlines face in providing safe meals.
Despite the unsettling situation, both United Airlines and Japan Airlines quickly coordinated with health authorities. They made sure passengers got the necessary treatment. This quick action highlights the safety measures that modern airlines take to address health concerns during flights.
