A United Airlines flight heading to Washington landed urgently at Shannon Airport due to a medical issue. The crew acted quickly to ensure the affected passenger received immediate care.
The flight, traveling from Zurich to Washington, carried 151 people on a Boeing 767-300(ER). Two hours into the journey, the crew contacted Irish air traffic control to request an emergency landing. The plane was flying 80 kilometers off Ireland’s southwest coast when the situation occurred.
Shannon Airport authorities responded immediately. They coordinated with the National Ambulance Service to prepare for the landing. The crew reported an overweight landing, prompting the airport’s Fire and Rescue Service to take precautionary positions near the runway. The Boeing 767-300(ER) touched down safely at 1:35 PM. Emergency vehicles guided it to the terminal.
Medical teams boarded quickly. Paramedics assessed the passenger and provided necessary treatment. They transferred the individual to University Hospital Limerick for further care. Fire crews inspected the plane’s brakes to prevent overheating from the overweight landing.
Passengers exited and waited in Shannon Airport’s transit lounge. Airline staff worked on alternate travel arrangements. United Airlines sent another Boeing 767-300 and a new crew, but the flight was later canceled. Airport teams ensured travelers remained comfortable.
United Airlines and local authorities handled the emergency efficiently. Their fast response minimized disruptions and ensured passenger safety.
