United Airlines’ New Tool Helps Wheelchair Travelers Find the Right Plane!

United Airlines recently achieved a significant milestone in accessible air travel by helping over 20,000 wheelchair users find suitable aircraft with its innovative digital sizing tool. Launched in March 2024, this industry-first feature not only boosts customer satisfaction scores by nearly four points but also enhances the travel experience.

Available on the United Airlines app and united.com, the digital sizing tool allows customers to input their wheelchair dimensions. Then, it generates tailored flight recommendations to accommodate their mobility needs. Consequently, this tool ensures proper wheelchair storage from the moment passengers book their flights.

In its commitment to accessibility, United Airlines has partnered with the United Spinal Association. This collaboration not only aims to inspire innovative solutions for air travel but also showcases United’s leadership in the industry.

In addition to the digital tool, United Airlines has implemented several features to assist passengers with disabilities. For instance, mobile technology for ramp agents tracks wheelchairs onboard, thereby significantly reducing the risk of misplaced devices.

Furthermore, United became the first U.S. airline to introduce Braille signage in aircraft cabins, which aids passengers with visual impairments. Moreover, this initiative will expand across the fleet by 2026.

United Airlines’ in-flight entertainment systems include closed captioning, text-to-speech controls, and audio descriptions, allowing all passengers to enjoy entertainment comfortably. Additionally, the airline’s app offers improved accessibility for visually impaired users, enhancing their navigation experience.

Looking forward, United Airlines plans to acquire about 700 new aircraft by 2032, each equipped with advanced accessibility features. Through partnerships like the one with the United Spinal Association, United aims not only to set new standards for accessible air travel but also to ensure all passengers receive top-tier care and service.
