United Airlines will expand its network in the summer of 2025 with a new direct route from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO) in San Jose, Costa Rica. Starting on May 22nd, United Airlines will offer daily flights. This route will become the airline’s seventh from San Jose. It will serve both leisure and business travelers as Costa Rica continues to gain popularity as a vacation spot.
United Airlines will operate the service with a Boeing 737 Max 8, which suits medium-haul flights. The aircraft will feature two cabins. Specifically, the first-class cabin will have 16 seats, and the economy cabin will have 150 seats, including Economy Plus seats with extra legroom. The route will run on a red-eye schedule.
For instance, United will depart San Francisco at 11:34 PM and arrive in Costa Rica at 7:15 AM. Likewise, the return flight will leave San Jose at 8:35 AM and land in San Francisco at 2:34 PM. Despite the overnight schedule, United won’t include lie-flat seats in first class, as the route mainly attracts leisure travelers.
Moreover, this new route supports United Airlines’ strategy to expand in Central America and the Caribbean. The carrier already flies to Costa Rica from U.S. cities like Houston, Newark, and Chicago. Additionally, United Airlines continues to grow its presence at SFO, its primary West Coast hub. As a result, this new flight will meet the rising demand for direct connections between the U.S. and Costa Rica, boosting tourism and strengthening ties between the two regions.
