United Airlines is set to announce new routes at an event in October. This has sparked excitement, especially about a possible flight to Bangkok, Thailand. While some discuss Kuala Lumpur, experts see Bangkok as a better option due to higher passenger demand.
Previously, United Airlines operated flights to Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. However, demand has shifted. The airline once served Bangkok as an intra-Asia route, but there have been no direct flights from the U.S. in years. Thai Airways used to offer non-stop flights from Los Angeles and New York, but economic factors led to their end. Although Bangkok yields less than places like Singapore, the airline remains hopeful.
Recently, United has succeeded with its Manila route. This shows that non-stop service can perform better than connecting flights. However, the airline competes with Philippine Airlines, which also offers non-stop flights to Manila. Interestingly, jet fuel prices are much lower now than when Thai Airways operated the U.S.-Bangkok route, allowing for competitive pricing.
The introduction of Boeing 787s could help launch new routes. These planes are more fuel-efficient than the Airbus A340-500s previously used. Experts suggest United may consider an intra-Asia flight to Bangkok instead of restarting its Vietnam routes, which ended in 2016. While United had a strong presence in the Vietnam-U.S. market, current conditions and competition from Vietnam Airlines complicate matters.
United Airlines has built a strong Pacific network through acquisitions, including Pan Am’s operations. This gives the airline an advantage in the Pacific market, unlike U.S. rivals that have cut back on Asia operations. While some see the Bangkok service as uncertain, United’s history of route experimentation makes it a strong contender.
As October approaches, travelers and MileagePlus members eagerly await news of new destinations. If United Airlines confirms service to Bangkok, it will mark a significant step in reestablishing direct routes to this popular travel hub in Southeast Asia.
