United Airlines Slashes Routes from Tulum – Here’s What You Need to Know

United Airlines has reduced its Tulum routes, following American Airlines in scaling back services at Tulum International Airport. This new airport serves both domestic and international travelers heading to the Riviera Maya and Yucatán Peninsula. Moreover, the airport offers an alternative to Cancun International Airport, located just 78 miles away. As a result, United Airlines will discontinue its seasonal flight to Los Angeles from Tulum.

Additionally, the Chicago and Newark routes will temporarily pause. Specifically, the Chicago route will halt from March 30 to October 26, while Newark’s service will stop from May 20 to October 26. However, United will retain its twice-daily service from Houston, continuing its presence at Tulum.

Tulum International Airport began commercial operations in December 2023 and quickly attracted several airlines. For example, Aeromexico and Viva Aerobus added domestic routes, while United and American Airlines began international flights to the US. Unfortunately, lower demand for the region has led to route suspensions. For instance, American Airlines will cease its Charlotte route starting February 10.

On the other hand, demand from Canada remains strong. Air Canada continues to operate year-round flights from Montreal and Toronto, along with seasonal services from Ottawa and Quebec City. Furthermore, Air Transat, WestJet, and Sunwing provide service to Tulum, strengthening connections for Canadian travelers. In addition, Tulum will soon receive its first European flight. Lufthansa’s Discover Airlines will begin direct service to Frankfurt in December.

Although United Airlines is scaling back its routes, other US carriers remain committed to Tulum. For instance, Delta Airlines connects Atlanta to Tulum, with seasonal services launching from Minneapolis. Additionally, JetBlue offers seasonal flights to New York JFK. Airlines regularly adjust their schedules based on demand. As a result, Tulum’s future as an international hub appears promising, with key routes still in operation.
