United Airlines faces significant delays at Newark Liberty International Airport due to an air traffic controller shortage. The shortage affects the airline’s hub in Newark and disrupts its operations. United Airlines reported that the shortage worsens delays and cancellations in its flight network.
United Airlines is a major U.S. carrier, based in Chicago. It operates a vast network of domestic and international flights. As a Star Alliance member, it offers global connectivity and strives to enhance passenger experiences with modernized fleets and improved services.
The situation worsened in November. United Airlines reported that, out of the first 25 days, the FAA reduced traffic 12 times. The shortage of controllers caused delays for more than 343,000 passengers. On November 15, flight cancellations affected 1,880 passengers, while 24,558 others faced gate delays.
The shortage also impacts airports around New York City, including Newark. Airlines struggle with added costs from cancellations and longer taxi times. The FAA extended flight slot requirements to help manage congestion, allowing airlines to keep their takeoff and landing slots despite staffing shortages.
The FAA is addressing the shortage by hiring new controllers. It hired 1,800 new controllers this year, the most in over a decade. However, this won’t immediately ease delays. As the holiday season picks up, travelers will face continued disruptions. United Airlines urges a quick resolution to the shortage to lessen the impact on passengers.
