United Airlines has recently announced a groundbreaking initiative to purchase up to 1 million gallons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for use at its base hub, Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD). This move marks a significant milestone in the airline industry’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions and embrace eco-friendly practices.
The airline has partnered with Finnish fuel producer Neste, who will begin delivering the SAF to ORD before the end of August. This will make United the first commercial carrier to operationalize the use of SAF for flights departing from Chicago O’Hare International Airport.
United Airlines has been at the forefront of promoting sustainable aviation practices, with existing SAF utilization at airports such as Amsterdam Schiphol, London Heathrow, Los Angeles International, and San Francisco International. Despite SAF currently representing only a small fraction of United’s total fuel consumption, the airline remains committed to expanding its usage.
President of United Airlines, Brett Hart, emphasized the importance of collaboration between airlines and policymakers to drive the growth of SAF in the aviation sector. He highlighted the role of legislative support, such as the tax incentives provided by the Illinois government, in enabling the adoption of SAF at O’Hare.
In line with its sustainability goals, United Airlines has established the United Airlines Ventures Sustainable Flight Fund to accelerate the development and deployment of SAF for flights. This initiative underscores the airline’s dedication to reducing its carbon footprint and supporting the decarbonization efforts of the U.S. aviation industry.
Alexander Kueper, Vice President of Neste‘s renewable aviation business, expressed enthusiasm about the expanded partnership with United Airlines and the opportunity to see their SAF being utilized at a major U.S. airport. This collaboration reflects Neste’s commitment to advancing sustainable aviation practices and contributing to the industry’s transition towards greener fuel alternatives.
United Airlines’ commitment to embracing sustainable aviation practices sets a positive example for the industry, encouraging other airlines to prioritize eco-friendly initiatives and drive innovation in reducing carbon emissions. With this significant step towards sustainable aviation, United Airlines paves the way for a more environmentally conscious future in air travel.
