United Cuts London Flights: Big Changes for LA and Dulles Travelers!

Chicago-based United Airlines announced a reduction in flights to London next spring. This decision affects service from both Los Angeles and Washington D.C. The airline also revealed plans to expand its international network by adding eight new destinations. Notably, three of these new routes will depart from Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD).

As spring approaches, United Airlines will cut two daily flights to London Heathrow Airport (LHR). From Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), the airline originally scheduled two daily flights starting in April 2025. However, the latest updates show only one daily flight will now operate, according to aviation data. Similarly, from IAD, United planned three daily flights but will now only offer two.

Currently, United Airlines operates the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner twice daily on the LAX-LHR route. This month, the airline scheduled a total of 92 flights, providing over 23,600 seats. Beginning next month, the frequency drops to one daily flight. Consequently, November will see only 60 flights available, offering just over 15,400 seats. The airline had previously planned to maintain one daily flight until March but will continue this reduced schedule indefinitely.

On the LAX-LHR route, United Airlines competes with American Airlines, British Airways, and Virgin Atlantic. American Airlines employs a mix of aircraft, including the 777-200ER and 777-300ER. Yet, American also plans to reduce its frequencies in collaboration with British Airways, which utilizes the Airbus A380 and its own 777 models.

Delta Air Lines used to operate nonstop service between LAX and LHR but suspended this route earlier this year. They now rely on their partner Virgin Atlantic for service on this route.

For the IAD-LHR route, United Airlines uses the 767-300ER and 777-200ER aircraft. This month, the airline has scheduled 124 flights, providing 32,807 seats. The 777-200ER operates the majority of these flights, totaling 111. Meanwhile, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic also provide daily service on this route. United Airlines slightly edges out British Airways, with only two more frequencies scheduled this month. British Airways will operate 122 flights using various aircraft, including the A380 and 787 models.

Next month, United plans to use both aircraft types equally, scheduling 60 flights each. December will mirror this operation, adjusting for the extra day. January will maintain the same frequency as December, totaling 124 flights. The 767-300ER will serve the route through February, while March will see United exclusively use the 777-200ER.

United Airlines has not commented on the reasons behind these changes to its LAX-LHR and IAD-LHR flights. This shift reflects the airline’s ongoing efforts to balance capacity with demand while expanding its international presence.
