As November approaches, aspiring female pilots and engineers can look forward to exciting news. Specifically, applications for the Air Canada and CAE Captain Judy Cameron Scholarship open on November 1, 2024. These scholarships aim to empower young women who pursue careers in non-traditional aviation fields, inspired by Air Canada’s first female pilot, Judy Cameron.
This year marks the sixth edition of the scholarships. Therefore, Air Canada and CAE will award up to eight young Canadian women who want to become commercial pilots or aircraft maintenance engineers. The scholarship program, launched in 2019, initially awarded four scholarships. However, the partnership between Air Canada and CAE expanded that number to eight by 2023.
Furthermore, these scholarships honor Judy Cameron’s contributions and promote the Northern Lights Aero Foundation’s mission. Among the successful candidates, four trainees to become commercial pilots will also join the CAE Women in Flight program as ambassadors. This initiative encourages young girls and women to “dream big” and showcases role models who exemplify leadership and community involvement in aviation.
Additionally, CAE actively fosters female representation in aviation through the Women in Flight Ambassador program. The program partners with airlines worldwide to create scholarships for women, enabling access to pilot training. CAE emphasizes that attracting more women to the flight deck remains a top priority. Consequently, their initiatives, including the Captain Judy scholarships, aim to inspire the next generation of aviation professionals.
At present, the aviation industry faces a significant pilot shortage. CAE projects a need for 63,000 commercial pilots in North America by 2032. Sadly, women represent only 5% of pilots, which highlights the urgent need for increased representation. Thus, we must attract more women to consider aviation as a career to meet this demand.
Moreover, Air Canada recognizes the importance of filling the pilot pipeline. The airline’s diverse fleet of 250 aircraft makes this initiative critical. The Captain Judy Cameron Scholarship serves as a cornerstone in Air Canada’s commitment to developing future aviation professionals. By supporting these scholarships, Air Canada shapes a more inclusive aviation landscape.
Ultimately, Judy Cameron’s legacy continues to inspire many. She broke barriers as the first woman to graduate from Selkirk College’s Aviation Technology Program in 1975. In addition, her remarkable career as a pilot, including being the first female captain of a Boeing 777 in Canada, proves what women can achieve in aviation.
Through these scholarships, Air Canada and CAE ensure that the spirit of Judy Cameron lives on and fosters a new generation of female aviators.
