In a bizarre turn of events, Frankfurt Airport found itself plunged into darkness as a tiny dormouse unwittingly caused a major power outage. The nocturnal visitor managed to trigger a short-circuit at an electricity substation, disrupting part of the airport’s power supply for several hours.
According to officials, the mischievous dormouse’s antics unfolded late at night, around 10:45 p.m. on a fateful Monday. Energy company Syna confirmed that the rodent’s curious behavior led to the short-circuit, resulting in a temporary blackout. In response to the incident, the airport’s fire service sprang into action to address the smoke generated by the electrical disturbance.
Despite the unexpected disruption, the impact on flight operations was relatively contained, thanks to the timing of the power cut. As the incident occurred just before the conclusion of nightly flight schedules, the airport managed to minimize the overall inconvenience for travelers.
After a few tense hours, power was successfully restored around 3:20 a.m., bringing an end to the dormouse’s unplanned adventure. Tragically, the tiny culprit was discovered lifeless next to the damaged wire it had gnawed through, inadvertently causing the chaos.
In the aftermath of the incident, airport operator Fraport issued a statement acknowledging the technical challenges faced and warned of potential flight delays and cancellations in the morning following the power disruption. Despite the proactive measures taken, reports indicated that eleven flights were canceled on the subsequent morning as a result of the unforeseen circumstances.
The dormouse’s unexpected escapade serves as a reminder of the intricate connections between nature and modern infrastructure, highlighting the unpredictable ways in which wildlife can influence human activities. This peculiar event at Frankfurt Airport will undoubtedly be remembered as a testament to the remarkable impact of even the smallest creatures on our highly interconnected world.
