Vietnam Airlines launched a sustainable flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Paris for the 2024 SkyTeam Aviation Challenge. This flight not only highlighted the airline’s commitment to eco-friendly air travel but also emphasized its focus on environmental conservation. Moreover, it aligned with the United Nations’ International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, adding more meaning to the event.
Passengers on board received plush toys of the endangered white-cheeked gibbon. This gesture, furthermore, supports the “Contribute Leaves to the Forests” initiative, which aims to reforest 50 hectares in Northwest Vietnam. The project not only focuses on restoring forests but also on lowering CO2 emissions and raising awareness about biodiversity. Importantly, the critically endangered gibbon, with only 14 left in the wild, remains a key focus of this effort.
Vietnam Airlines additionally encouraged “light flying” by asking travelers to pack less. As a result, lighter luggage helped reduce the aircraft’s weight, which in turn cut fuel consumption and lowered emissions. Consequently, passengers with minimal luggage received recognition for their effort in supporting this goal.
The airline also used a Boeing 787-9 to optimize fuel use and minimize emissions. Its advanced engines reduced both noise and environmental impact. Vietnam Airlines, therefore, continues to push forward with its plan to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
Moreover, Vietnam Airlines has significantly reduced its reliance on single-use plastics and nylon, removing millions of such items each year. The airline, in addition, focuses on sourcing local food and recycling dry goods to limit waste. As a result, these efforts further enhance its sustainability agenda.
Vietnam Airlines leads in driving green practices through the SkyTeam challenge. The airline remains focused on continually reducing its impact and shaping a greener future for aviation.
