Virgin Atlantic is making an exciting return to the London-Accra route, set to begin in the summer of 2025. After more than ten years, the airline will launch daily flights from London Heathrow to Accra’s Kotoka International Airport on May 1, 2025. These flights will utilize the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, known for its comfort and efficiency. This announcement follows the airline’s plan to start services to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in early 2025.
The United Kingdom maintains strong ties with Ghana, which is home to one of the largest Ghanaian diasporas in the world. With over 114,000 Ghanaian-born residents in the UK, the demand for travel between the two nations remains high. Therefore, Virgin Atlantic expects many passengers from the visiting friends and relatives (VFR) segment to book flights. Additionally, around 10% of travelers will likely continue their journeys from London to New York, which strengthens the route’s international significance.
Virgin Atlantic also plans to focus on cargo services for this route. Each flight will provide a capacity of 30 metric tons. This capacity allows the transport of essential goods, such as fresh produce, between Ghana, the UK, and the U.S. Trade between the UK and Ghana continues to flourish, reaching £1.2 billion by early 2024. Thus, this route proves valuable for both passenger and cargo operations.
While British Airways already operates flights on this route, Virgin Atlantic remains confident it can capture a significant share of the growing market.
