Virgin Australia officially returned to international skies with a landmark flight to Doha on June 12, 2025. The flight departed Sydney and landed in Doha later that evening, marking a key turning point. Since this was the airline’s first major international service post-recovery, it carried heavy expectations.
Through a partnership with Qatar Airways, Virgin Australia now links Australians to Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Moreover, the connection through Hamad International Airport allows faster access to dozens of cities. As a result, travelers can now enjoy more flexible global routes than ever before.
Soon after the June 12 launch, more cities will follow. Virgin Australia plans routes from Brisbane, Perth, and Melbourne by December 2025. Because of bilateral permissions, both airlines will expand traffic rights and capacity. Therefore, Australians will benefit from wider access and more travel choices.
By the end of 2025, Virgin Australia will offer 2.65 million seats annually between Australia and Doha. In addition, these flights use Qatar Airways’ Boeing 777-300ER aircraft with business suites and economy seats. Furthermore, every passenger will enjoy high-speed Wi-Fi access throughout the journey.
This new international link will also support the local economy. Virgin Australia expects more than $3 billion in economic activity within five years. Besides boosting tourism, the airline will create jobs in aviation, hospitality, and transport. Moreover, pilots and crew will gain valuable global experience.
