Volaris Shuts Down U.S. Routes from a Mexican City

Volaris, a top Mexican budget airline, will stop all U.S. routes from Monterrey by July 2025. The airline recently restarted these flights but has now reversed its decision. Cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, and Oakland will lose direct service from Monterrey.

Volaris made this move to shift its international strategy. The airline added some routes less than a year ago. It wanted to grow its U.S. market. However, that strategy quickly changed. Routes to cities like Denver and Dallas had returned briefly but will now vanish again. These cuts reduce Monterrey’s air links with major U.S. cities.

By June 2025, only two routes—Los Angeles and Miami—will still operate. In July, Volaris will stop the Los Angeles flight. The Miami route will run once weekly. After that, no U.S. routes will leave from Monterrey.

Volaris likely made this decision due to rising costs and weaker demand. Competition in both countries also affected profits. The airline wants to focus on stronger markets. Despite the cuts, Volaris keeps growing in other places.

Volaris will launch new routes from San Antonio to Morelia and San Luis Potosí in July. These cities attract both business and vacation travelers. The airline also started a daily nonstop flight from Oakland to Los Cabos. That route boosts travel between California and Mexico’s top beach spots.
