A Qatar Airways flight faced a tragedy when a passenger, 63-year-old Mahasen Mohamed, died during a medical emergency on the way to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. The incident happened on October 31 during a 16-hour journey from Doha. Mohamed collapsed mid-flight, causing distress among other passengers. Qatar Airways has not yet shared details on the in-flight emergency.
The flight departed from Doha Hamad International Airport toward Dallas/Fort Worth. Mohamed collapsed after sitting for an extended period. A physician onboard quickly responded and administered CPR for nearly an hour, but she remained unresponsive. Emergency responders met the plane on arrival in Dallas, but despite their efforts, they pronounced Mohamed dead shortly after landing.
Doctors later identified pulmonary thromboembolism, a blocked lung artery from a blood clot, as her cause of death. This condition, worsened by long periods of sitting, can pose serious risks on long flights. Her family mentioned her history of blood clot issues, which increased her risk for this life-threatening condition. Experts emphasize that prolonged immobility during flights may elevate health risks for people with similar medical histories.
The involved aircraft was a Boeing 777-200, a key model within Qatar Airways’ fleet of 92 Boeing 777 planes. This 16-year-old plane remains important in the airline’s long-haul operations. Qatar Airways equips these planes with both business and economy seats for comfort. This tragedy highlights the importance of medical preparedness and health awareness during lengthy air travel.
After this incident, travelers should take preventive health measures on flights, especially during long journeys. Passengers should stand, stretch, and move periodically to reduce health risks. Qatar Airways has not yet commented on the incident.
