What Happens When Ryanair Fights €179 Million? The Baggage Fee Battle Unfolds

Ryanair plans to appeal Spain’s Consumer Affairs Ministry’s decision. The ministry fined Ryanair and other low-cost airlines €179 million for baggage fees. Five airlines, including Ryanair, easyJet, Volotea, Norwegian, and Vueling, received fines for charging excessive baggage fees. The Spanish Ministry says the airlines violated customer rights. They charged too much for carry-on luggage, seat selection, and boarding pass printing. They also banned cash payments at check-in desks and for onboard purchases.

Ryanair received the largest fine of €108 million. Vueling paid €39 million, easyJet €29 million, Norwegian €1.6 million, and Volotea €1.2 million. Ryanair appealed the fine, but the ministry rejected it. The ruling also bans the airlines from using the controversial practices.

Ryanair opposes the fine. It argues that these charges help keep flight costs low. The airline says outdated regulations threaten low-cost airlines’ ability to offer affordable services. Ryanair claims the fines damage free-market competition in Europe’s airline industry.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) also condemned Spain’s decision. It warned that airlines may raise fares if they include baggage charges in ticket prices. This could limit customer choice. Ryanair is determined to fight the penalties. The airline defends its policies, which lower fares and benefit passengers.
