Wizz Air is set to ground 40 Airbus A320neo planes until 2026 due to ongoing engine challenges. The airline confirmed it will face operational hurdles caused by issues with Pratt & Whitney’s PW1100G-JM engines. These engines have faced powder metal problems, requiring extensive inspections and repairs.
The grounding affects almost 20% of Wizz Air’s A320neo fleet, impacting its capacity to operate fully. Pratt & Whitney has agreed to support Wizz Air with operational assistance and a compensation package. This agreement aims to reduce financial strain and ensure smoother operations despite the disruptions. Both parties are working to minimize the impact on the airline’s services and finances.
Wizz Air plans to recover from these challenges by fiscal year 2026. By then, it expects to add 50 new Airbus A321neo planes, increasing its fleet efficiency and sustainability. The airline aims to grow its seat capacity by 20%, boosting its overall market presence. Additionally, the increased share of A321neo planes will replace older aircraft, supporting its environmental goals.
Currently, Wizz Air operates over 220 Airbus A320 and A321neo aircraft across its subsidiaries. It plans to expand significantly with hundreds more planes in the coming years. The airline has already committed to 75 additional A321neos, underscoring its long-term growth strategy despite temporary setbacks.
Pratt & Whitney’s engine problems have affected several airlines, not just Wizz Air. Between 2023 and 2026, hundreds of engines require inspections for potential microscopic cracks. This issue highlights the industry’s reliance on robust engine performance and maintenance.
