Air China resumed flights to Pyongyang after a long six-year pause, signaling cautious recovery efforts. However, the airline quickly faced weak demand on the revived route. As a result, Air China halted future bookings despite restarting the Beijing to Pyongyang service. This move highlights ongoing challenges in restoring travel between China and North Korea.
Initially, Air China operated a single flight using a Boeing 737-700 aircraft on March 30, 2026. Although the airline aimed to rebuild connectivity, limited passenger interest disrupted early momentum. Consequently, the airline adjusted its strategy and paused further ticket sales. This quick shift reflects fragile demand conditions in the region.
Previously, travel between China and North Korea stopped during the global pandemic in early 2020. Later, North Korea reopened gradually, yet only its national carrier maintained limited operations. Meanwhile, Air China stayed absent from the route until this recent attempt. Therefore, this resumption marked a significant but cautious step toward normalization.
Before the pandemic, Chinese travelers formed the largest share of visitors to North Korea. Additionally, many international tourists entered the country through China. However, current travel restrictions and policy changes reduced this flow significantly. As a result, demand for flights from Beijing remains weak and inconsistent.
At the same time, North Korea strengthened tourism ties with Russia during its slow reopening phase. Consequently, most current visitors arrive in organized groups from Russia instead of China. This shift in travel patterns further limits demand for traditional routes like Beijing to Pyongyang.
Meanwhile, rail connections between the two capitals resumed earlier in March, offering an alternative travel option. Although these developments suggest gradual reopening, the aviation sector still faces uncertainty. Therefore, Air China must carefully assess future demand before restoring regular services.
